TikTok Is Making Comments More Social: What It Means for Brands

On TikTok, the content does not always end when the video finishes.

Sometimes the comments are half the entertainment.

TikTok is leaning further into this behaviour with new ways for users and creators to interact in comment sections, including voice comments, polls and photo-based replies. Voice comments can be up to 60 seconds long, creators can add polls with up to five options, and users can add as many as nine photos to a comment carousel.

For brands, this may sound like another small social media update.

It is actually part of something bigger.

Social media is becoming less about brands broadcasting content and more about creating spaces where audiences participate.

Your Comment Section Is Content

Businesses put enormous effort into creating the post, but often give very little thought to what happens afterwards.

That needs to change.

If someone takes the time to comment on your TikTok, Instagram Reel or Facebook post, they have already moved beyond passive viewing.

They are participating.

For brands investing in social media marketing, community engagement should therefore form part of the content strategy, not something someone checks at the end of the day.

TikTok’s new tools make those conversations richer.

Instead of only typing a response, users can leave voice notes or visual replies. Creators can also use polls directly in comments to understand what their audience thinks.

Polls Could Be a Marketing Goldmine

One of the simplest new features may also be one of the most useful.

Polls.

Rather than guessing what people want, brands can ask them.

A restaurant could ask which burger should return to the menu.

A fashion retailer could ask followers to choose between two styles.

A home improvement company could ask which kitchen finish people prefer.

A fitness brand could ask what its audience struggles with most.

Now you have engagement and audience insight happening in the same place.

The results could influence future social content, email campaigns, product development and even your content marketing strategy.

That is when social media becomes more than posting.

It becomes market research.

Voice Can Make Brands Feel More Human

Voice comments also introduce an interesting opportunity.

There is something inherently more personal about hearing a real person respond.

For founder-led brands, restaurants, lifestyle businesses, service companies and creators, voice could make community management feel less formal and more conversational.

That does not mean every comment deserves a 60-second voice note.

Use it where it adds something.

A chef might respond verbally to a question about a dish. A product specialist could quickly explain a feature. A team member could respond to a funny customer comment in a way that feels spontaneous.

The point is not to use every new feature because it exists.

The point is to find moments where it makes the interaction better.

Give People Something to Respond To

The brands that benefit most from these tools will probably be those already creating content designed to encourage conversation.

Instead of ending every caption with “Contact us today”, try questions people actually want to answer.

For example:

  • Which would you choose?
  • What would you add?
  • Have you tried this?
  • Show us your version.
  • What should we test next?
  • Which one wins?

These are simple prompts, but they change the role of the audience.

Suddenly people are part of the content.

This can be particularly useful for social media marketing South Africa, where local humour, opinions, experiences and cultural references can turn an ordinary post into a lively conversation.

User Responses Can Inspire Your Next Campaign

Comments are also a useful source of content ideas.

If customers repeatedly ask the same question, answer it in your next video.

If one comment starts a debate, create a follow-up post.

If customers share images of themselves using your product, consider how user-generated content could become part of your strategy, with permission where required.

Your audience is constantly telling you what interests them.

Good marketers listen.

Social Engagement Still Needs a Destination

More comments and engagement are useful, but businesses also need to consider what happens next.

Someone discovers your brand on TikTok. They enjoy your content. They read the comments. They visit your profile.

Where do you send them?

Your social strategy should connect naturally to your website, lead generation process, CRM marketing and other digital channels.

For some campaigns, the objective may simply be awareness.

For others, you want that attention to turn into website traffic, enquiries or sales.

This is why performance marketing needs both creative thinking and measurement.

Do Not Chase Every TikTok Trend

TikTok moves quickly.

That does not mean your brand needs to participate in everything.

A better social media strategy asks whether the format, trend or feature makes sense for your audience.

Use trends when they fit naturally. Use new tools when they improve the experience. Skip them when they do not.

Forced social content is usually easy to spot.

The brands that perform well tend to understand their own personality first, then use the platform in a way that feels natural.

Turn Social Media Into a Conversation

TikTok’s expanded comment features are another sign that community is becoming increasingly important in digital marketing.

We believe good social marketing should do more than fill a content calendar.

It should give people a reason to stop, react, respond and remember your brand.
